Snowshoeing in Grand County, Colorado

Snow Mountain Ranch/YMCA of the Rockies
Near Granby and close to both the Winter Park and Silver Creek ski areas, Snow Mountain Ranch offers an assortment of snowshoeing opportunities.
Free, guided snowshoe hikes on the ranch are available by reservation. A groomed trail for jogging or snowshoeing is available and animals are welcome on that trail. Information: (970) 887-2152 or (303) 443-4743.
Sol Vista Mountain Resort
Showshoe enthusiasts can take advantage of the largest groomed trail system in Colorado at Silver Creek with 40 kilometers of cross- country/snowshoe trails. Although there are no organized hikes, trekkers can explore at their own pace the trails through pine and aspen forests that are home to large herds of deer and elk. Information: 1-800-448-9458.
Devil's Thumb Ranch
North of Fraser, Devil's Thumb provides trails of varying difficulty that wind through forested hillsides and across open meadows. Snowshoe-only trails as well as snowshoeing on cross- country trails are available. Information: (970) 726-8231.
Grand Lake Village
Grand Lake is home to many quiet snowshoe trails with breathtaking views. The Grand Lake Golf Course, the hiking trails around Lake Granby and Shadow Mountain Lake and the Shadow Mountain canal are perfect for beginners with their gentle slopes and easy access. Showshoe rentals are available at Rocky Mountain Sports in Grand Lake, (970) 627-8124. Trail maps are available at the Grand Lake Visitor Center.
Rocky Mountain National Park
The two-mile Harbison Meadow loop, beginning at the Harbison picnic area, begins in a meadow, goes through a wooded area and then along the river. Good for beginning snowshoers, the trail is two miles from the Kawuneeche Visitor Center. Information: (970) 627- 3471.
Winter Park Resort
Trails that remain undiscovered by skiers and snowboarders are featured on a guided hike. The two-hour, two-mile tour departs daily at 1 p.m. from the base of the ski area. The $25 cost includes snowshoes, poles and a single-ride lift ticket. Information: (970) 726-5514 ext. 1727.
